CCSGO is hosting a conversation-focused event for those curious about Group Relations conferences and the Chicago Tavistock tradition. Together, we will look at what actually happens in these spaces and how they support reflection, connection, and learning about group dynamics.
Why Group Relations?
Group relations is an experiential approach to understanding how groups and organizations function as systems. Rather than studying these dynamics from a distance, participants learn from their own experience as it unfolds within the group as a whole.
This methodology focuses on questions of authority, leadership, role, and membership, including dynamics that are often outside of awareness. Patterns of behavior, emotion, and interaction are attended to as they emerge, and work is done to consider how individual actions both shape and are shaped by the larger system.
Group relations conferences are the primary method through which this learning takes place. Designed as temporary organizations, they provide a setting to study these dynamics in real time. Through participation, observation, and reflection, members examine how they take up roles, relate to authority, and contribute to the work of the group.
The aim is not to prescribe solutions, but to deepen awareness. With a clearer understanding of group and system dynamics, participants are better able to make choices about how they lead, follow, and work within the organizations and communities to which they return.
